As a veterinarian in Gulf Breeze, FL, I spend time helping people keep their pets healthy. Just as important is helping them to have enriched lives. That means getting out of the house and experiencing the world safely. 

This area is one of the most dog friendly regions in the Southeast, although there are some things to keep in mind.

IMPORTANT: Dog parks can be fun, but only for vaccinated, well-socialized dogs. We do see dog fight emergencies at our clinic that have come from dog parks. I do not recommend taking dogs that are anxious or aggressive around other people or dogs. The laws recently in FL have changed, and there are stricter penalties if a dog bites a person. Keep this in mind if you are not sure how your dog will react in an unfamiliar environment. Make sure your dog is not overstimulated. Always check the rules for dogs prior to going to any location.

Legal & Health 

• Rabies vaccination required by law 

• Strongly recommended: DHLPP+ Bordetella 

• Year-round heartworm, flea & tick prevention. This is Florida, parasites never take a break.

• Do not take young puppies to dog parks prior to being FULLY vaccinated 

Behavior 

• Leash unless explicitly off-leash area 

• Reliable recall in dog parks 

• No aggressive behavior

• Monitor for stress signals like yawning, lip licking, and avoidance

• Don’t assume all “dog friendly” places are safe for dogs

Environmental Awareness 

• Avoid mid-day heat due to risk for heat stroke

• Bring water, because many places don’t provide it 

• Check pavement temperature before walking 

Final Thoughts 

Our area offers a wonderful opportunity for our dogs to get out of the house. You can go to the dog beach, breweries, shops, trails, and ice cream shops.
