In Gulf Breeze we need to be prepared for the possibility of a hurricane this time of year. Below is a list of hurricane preparation tips for your pets and things to consider while in the height of the season.
1. Create an Emergency Plan: Now is the time to figure out evacuation routes, hotels and shelters that allow pets. It is helpful to plan ahead for pets that have medical issues or are on medication. It is also advised to keep a copy of your pet’s vaccine history. Some essential items can include a week of food and water. You may also want to bring a kennel or crate, medications, medical records, a dog bed, collar, leashes and toys.
2. Microchip, ID tags and GPS tracking: Microchipping can be helpful if your pet gets lost. If they end up at a shelter or veterinary clinic they can be scanned for a chip. Login to your pet’s microchip information online to ensure your phone number and other contact information is up to date. ID tags with your name and phone number are recommended. Another option that has been helpful are GPS tracking devices that can be worn by your pet.
3. Pack a First Aid Kit: Prepare a first aid kid that includes saline eye solution, alcohol pads, scissors, bandage material, tape, and gauze.
4. Stay Informed: Stay updated on local weather alerts and evacuation orders.
5. Post-Hurricane Safety Measures: Once you are back home, keep pets in a safe place during any cleanup efforts. Keep them on a leash because some pets may act differently when stressed and try to flee.
Preparing for a hurricane can help reduce stress. FEMA has some good information on pet preparedness. Please call Gulf Breeze Animal Hospital if you need help with anything or need a consult with a veterinarian. We are happy to help!
